AMAZON… DELIVERING HOPE TO THE NHS?

When you think of Amazon I’m sure words like – “Conglomerate” or “multinational” or perhaps, controversially, even “tax evasion” may spring to mind…

But what about altruistic or philanthropic?

Amazon have recently partnered with the UK Government and the likes of Thermo Fisher Scientific to leverage their logistics network; to boost testing capacity for COVID-19 for front line NHS staff. They will be delivering test kits to these critical workers and to special test sites around the country.

Testing for COVID-19 has become a hot topic in the UK media and it’s great to see huge companies such as the likes of Amazon step in and support our NHS. Millions of consumers use and trust Amazon to deliver their necessities promptly and reliably and now it seems; the NHS can rely on them also.

This isn’t the only thing that Amazon are doing to do their part; They are launching the AWS (Amazon Web Services) Diagnostic Development Initiative — a global program to support customers in the US, Europe, and the rest of the world, who are working to bring better, more accurate, diagnostics solutions to market faster, and promote better collaboration across organisations that are working on similar problem.

The corporate giant is also helping to provide infrastructure and technology to enable NHSX – a joint unit between the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England and NHS Improvement – to quickly and securely launch a Covid-19 response platform for critical public services. AWS is providing the underlying infrastructure technology that will enable the NHS to aggregate information from across the NHS and other partner organisations. NHSX is leading this project to provide more accurate visibility on factors including occupancy levels at specific hospitals, capacity of A&E departments, and waiting times to inform and coordinate a national response to Covid-19. This information will lead to a better understanding of how the coronavirus is spreading, when and where the healthcare system will face most strain, and which interventions are proving more effective than others in helping to mitigate the crisis – helping the NHS to decide where best to allocate resources.

In the UK, Amazon has committed £3.2 million to support those who are most affected by the COVID-19 crisis, which includes a donation to the British Red Cross and a fund to support local organisations in communities.

This has got us thinking about how we, as a business, and as individuals can also do our bit, however small, to help during these unprecedented times. Many brands, large and small, will be feeling the repercussions of this global pandemic and economic crisis.
